Key Talking Points

• We as your parents want to make it clear that we are against drug and alcohol use by you or your friends. And we will not tolerate it.
  
  
• We have rule that this family follows. Teen drug and alcohol use is forbidden.
  
  
• You can endanger your life and the lives of other people. We do not want anything bad to happen to you. We don’t know what we will do if we lose you.
  
  
• We all count on each other and your brother and sister look up to you.
  
  
• Drug and Alcohol use can ruin your life and give you a very tough future. It will hurt your chances of graduating, ruin your chances of getting into college and possibly cause you to go to jail.
  
  
• We are here to help and support you. What can we do to help you not use drugs or alcohol?
  
  
• Are you unhappy, are you stressed out is there something you would like to talk about we promise we won’t get mad we want to help.
  
  
• Are your friends using drugs? How do you feel about that? Is it causing to just fit in.
  
  
• One thing is for sure we won’t give up on you; we will be constantly looking over your shoulder until you stop completely. If you need professional help, we will not only help you but we will be there every step of the way.

Here are some suggested things to keep in mind when you talk to you children

• Tell them you love them and are worried that they might be using drugs or alcohol.
  
  
• You know that drugs may seem like the thing to do, but doing drugs can have serious consequences.
  
  
• It makes you feel worried and concerned about them when they do drugs.
  
  
• You are there to listen to them.
  
  
• You want them to know that you are part of the solution.
  
  
• You tell them what you will do to help them.
  
  
• Let them know that this is not the end of the discussion and it will happen many time in the future.
  
  
• Parents let the children know the home rule we are in charge of what goes on in this house and as long as you are living here you will follow our rules.

Show the child/children the urine drug test kit, and tell them that they may be asked to be tested and that this test kit will tell us if you are using drugs.

Car Rule for parents who let their kids drives their cars and with the high cost of auto insurance parents are insuring their children’s car on their policy.

You will one day be asked to be tested in our home to see if you are using drugs or alcohol and if you refuse the car will be taken away and you get and pay for your own auto insurance.
